Terrific fun book of soccer trivia. Who knew Dallas Cowboys' kicker Toni Fritsch scored two goals for Austria vs. England at Wembley? Now you do. It's wild off-the-wall gems like this that are littered throughout this fun read. It's also super up-to-date with plenty of Messi & Ronaldo sightings on the pages.I kind of knew this book would work given Uli Hesse who wrote Tor!--the definitive history of German soccer--is also onboard with this project.
If you're interested in learning some futbol history through a collection of oddball facts and other tidbits, this is the book for you. While it sometimes does a good job of providing interesting answers, the answers were often buried in a lot of text. The book could certainly have used a bit more copy editing as there were a number of obvious typos/word omission no doubt due to the publisher and authors wanting the book out in time for the World Cup. I know I learned things about the "Beautiful Game" and its many oddities, just not what I necessarily wanted to know or have the information presented in a way that was always easily understood and digestible. It's a good collection of soccer legend and lore, if not always a properly informative one.
An entertaining reference book. If coupled with Club Soccer 101 by Luke Dempsey, you'd have a wonderful primer for any would-be soccer fan. And by this I mean all those Americans who watched the World Cup in 2014 but didn't know anything about the sport.
