About the Author
David Christopher Lane has been a Professor of Philosophy at Mt. San Antonio College for over 29 years. He has taught at the University of California, San Diego; California State University, Long Beach; California School of Professional Psychology; and the University of London in England, among other institutions. Professor Lane received his Ph.D. and M.A. with a focus on the Sociology of Knowledge from the University of California, San Diego, where he was also a recipient of a Regents Fellowship. He also received another M.A. in the history and phenomenology of religion from the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley. Dr. Lane has written a number of books, including several controversial studies on new religions, such as The Making of a Spiritual Movement: The Untold Story of Paul Twitchell and Eckankar; Exposing Cults: When The Skeptical Mind Confronts the Mystical; and DA: The Strange Case of Franklin Jones co-authored with Dr. Scott Lowe, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Lane is most well known for his critical studies of certain new religious founders, including the late John-Roger Hinkins of MSIA, Sathya Sai Baba, and Sri Gary Olsen of MasterPath. This unsettling research has led to the robbery of his home, numerable death threats, and a series of targeted lawsuits. His work has been widely cited in various encyclopedias and has served as the foundation for a number of investigative studies, including Peter McWilliams’ widely read cult expose’, Life 102: What To Do When Your Guru Sues You. Professor Lane was the first scholar to publish the life and work of Baba Faqir Chand under the title The Unknowing Sage which details the remarkable life of an Indian sage who claimed that all miracles and religious visions were projections of disciples’ own mind but they unwittingly gave credit for such to their respective gurus and religious traditions. Lane has been instrumental in publishing a number of books and articles on Faqir’s radical revelations and has coined the term “Chandian Effect†to describe how extraordinary experiences occur, even though they ultimately have a scientific explanation.

I first read this material when it was first released in 1979. The current edition is a vast improvement with complete sources that are timely and legitimate. I came away saying, "Yeah. This material is organized very well and flows beautifully. Professor lane did a good job here. I was in Eckankar from 1972 - 1984; followed Darwin Gross in his new venture from 1984 - 1989; then was a follower of the Parent-Line Radhasoami Faith from Agra for a year. I know the subject matter well, so that's why this book speaks to me personally. I left all the Light & Sound Teachings in 1994 and never looked back. I grew up spiritually, culturally, intellectually, and emotionally - but I still have good memories of that phase of my life. I am now a humanist with a small "h."
I thought I was getting the whole book with the kindle edition but it didn't download the whole thing. I like to have the actual book, but I'm not going to pay over two-hundred bucks for it LoL.
I highly recommend this book to anyone currently involved with the Eckankar movement. Paul Twitchell is an initiate of Sant Kirpal Singh of the Sant Mat movement, but stopped admitting this publicly after founding the Eckankar organization. The teachers of the Sant Mat movement have always given God's teachings free-of-charge. Sadly, Paul Twitchell did not follow suit.
Ah yes. This book has been a painful thorn in Eckankar's side since it first came out in the early 1980's. Though interpretations vary among critics and Eckankar's faithful about what the book ultimately reveals, the basic facts David Lane's book uncovers about Twitchell and Eckankar have yet to be disproved or explained away by anyone. And what are those facts? Simply that Eckankar's founder Paul Twitchell was a plagiarist and a tale-teller, and that Eckankar is a religion that was created by Twitchell, rather than a teaching that was revealed to Twitchell by mysterious "eck masters of the vairagi order."The reader may read Lane's book for the details of Twitchell's deceptions about his past, his former gurus, his claims of receiving dictation from eck masters and his claims of extremely high spiritual unfoldment (a free online edition of The Making of a Spiritual Movement can be found with a web search for "unauthorized eckankar"). All of Lane's points about Twitchell and Eckankar are backed-up with thorough documentation.I understand that people will come to different conclusions about Twitchell and the Eckankar religion from carefully reading Lane's book, particularly if they're believers in Eckankar (by far the most likely folks to read the book, though I think it's a fascinating book for anyone interested in religion or sociology). However, from what I've seen, very few Eckankar believers can read Lane's book and not come away feeling disturbed by what it reveals about Twitchell and Eckankar. And I think that reveals something positive about such readers, as they do well to feel disturbed when they discover their spiritual leaders freely lying to them, even if the lying is supposedly done for a greater spiritual good.
I bought this book decades ago and it was an eye-opener to show how much of a cult eckankar actually is. I would presume that a good number of negative reviews on Dr. Lane's book are written by eckists, because they are wont to defend their identification with the cult rather than to look at the truth about it. When you take a close look at eckankar and its self-serving hierarchy, you'll find that it is just one of many such organizations that uses subtle fear tactics and elevate its leaders to the position of gods. (You can easily do a search to find many, many examples of this). Dr Lane's book led me to do a great amount of research to prove for myself that the foundational works of eckankar are largely plagiarized, a fact that is dismissed by eckists as shared information on the astral plane. They have an excuse for all of their criminal behavior, no matter how untenable or insane such excuses are. The people at the bottom of this cult have no idea how corrupt and terrible it is, and they defend it out of their own interests to preserve their egos and bask in their so-called experiences. Thanks to the internet (which was just blossoming when this book was published), people can now do their own research to discover that Dr. Lane's account of eckankar is both true and a gift to those who need to know the truth. Eckankar is an organization that craves acceptance and validation, but can never achieve these because of its nefarious past, plagiarisms, failure to stand up to criticism or scrutiny, refusal to engage in public debate, and its psychopathic leaders. Further, the practices of eckankar, to any discerning individual who knows better (with a little education in psychology, neuroscience, quantum physics, etc.), are merely exercises of the mind and imagination. It is a rabbit hole for a good many who are encouraged and have their egos fed by a system of initiations that further attach them to the cult. At some point, eckists stop reading and listening to opposing points of views and spend the rest of their efforts reconfirming the distorted teachings of the group. It's a shame because most of the members are earnest seekers who have no idea what kind of organization they belong to. There has never been an earnest, fair and open debate between eck leaders and scholars, because this would destroy the group as it would shed light on the many distortions, lies, manipulations and reinterpretation of history. So the leaders continue to hide in the shadows and let the underlings carry on talks and introductions to glean more members and more money. They say they want validation, but you will never find them in the same forums as major religions or other organizations. You could only imagine what Sam Harris, Daniel Dennet, or Amit Goswami would make of this group in a public setting! Like every other cult, this one is all about money, ego, and power. And, like every other cult, eckankar has its own secret language (words from a fabricated lexicon with twisted and new meanings), a belief that their leader is god and a prophet, secret initiations that mean nothing at all, an ego-feeding system of initiations, a make-em-up history wherein they claim that leaders throughout history were secretly members of the group, etc. And they cannot prove anything they say. David Lane is a brave guy who has pulled a great many people out of a dark hole. Until you are willing to answer all the hard questions about eckankar, all you have for your critics are harsh words, slander and baseless arguments.
