I gave up on this book halfway through it. I wanted to stop 1/4 the way in, but I had hopes the author would actually talk about what her title suggested the book was about. She did not. The book is mostly her talking about her life. I have no idea who she is, so I don't actually care about her life or her experiences thus far. There is an entire part where she talks about autism and how her dad might be autistic. Again, I don't care. I bought this book to read about society's fascination with dead girls. Instead I read about her weird roommates in LA, her dad's obsession with books I've never heard of, and her personal musings on driving in LA.Alice Bolin shamelessly uses Dead Girls to sell a book that is actually a memoir, and a boring one at that. It is not well written and I often got lost about what she was talking about, though this could be due to me not paying attention because it was so boring and tedious to read. She critiques movies, series, and books that I have never heard of. There is very little pop culture referenced, except the exert on Britney Spears and her music and rough patch. I truly don't even understand how this got published with the description and title. It was a waste of money and paper.

The title of Bolin's book is misleading. She admits in Part 1 that she knows the title will sell books.3/4 of the books has nothing to do with the dead girl genre.3/4 of the books is personal essays cobbled together with no rhyme or reason. The personal essays are un-illuminating and include musings on Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and what it's like to live in L.A.You will wait for this aimless book to tie everything together but it never will. The blurb describes her essays as "accessible". This means they are "not too deep".Her insights are not interesting, nor her writing style engaging, or her voice unique. Her life experiences are limited and so are her observations.Part 1 is confident, though. Also, she broke me of my Dateline habit.Which is a good thing.

Alice Bolin has given us an erudite and contemplative exploration of the crossover literary border between memoir and critical essay - in fact she has shown us that there need be no border fence at all. She writes with a firm and assured voice and identity which never stands between the reader and the experience or argument being presented. Her examination of 'Dead Girl' tropes is intertwined with accounts of moving as a single white female from rural Nebraska to the Los Angeles Hollywoodopolis - and she manages that finest of balances between the personal and the objectively evaluative. A graceful book and destined to become cited many times in future academic writing, and on any list of good literature about growing up in the culture and concrete of the contemporary American West.

I was really impressed with the author of these essays. She is incisive about the state of women in the world as well as culture, TV, online. Her main interest is taking apart the "tradition" of modern media to use dead girls as victims who must be explained and mysteries to be solved. What does that say about women that we still consume these stories, and what does it say about the men and women who create them?

This series of essays focusing on America's true crime obsession is a thoughtful, honest, and informative piece of writing. Being a true crime junkie myself, I loved reading about what it is that drives people to find intrigue in the "dead girls."

These creative essays reader more like thought out TV reviews than works of creative writing. I read two-thirds of the book and stopped to find a better read.

The title is fairly misleading and the actual essays themselves are pretty much personal narratives. Some are better than others. The title is referenced several times but is the focus of only one essay.

The cultural analysis here is very strong, and while the personal essay aspects are more familiar, overall a fine piece on our contemporary scene.
