Loved this autobiography. Marie Colvin is a very inspirational wonder in many ways, but this story is warts and all and beautifully written. Would recommend it highly, for those wanting inspiration to live a big and full life, above and beyond our fears... and the repercussions of that in the realm she operated in. Great read, great woman, great story, great author and perspective.

Since at least the days of the Crimean and American Civil Wars, front-line correspondents conveyed some of the drama and agony of conflict to readers worldwide. The genre’s influence probably peaked during the Vietnam conflict as print and photojournalism was supplemented by near real-time television footage. When “the most trusted man in America”, Walter Cronkite of CBS News, assessed Vietnam as a lost cause after the Tet Offensive, Lyndon Johnson reportedly commented, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost America.” With the advent of social media, those days are long gone, but war correspondents – driven by adrenaline or advocacy – live on.Marie Colvin, American born but working for British publications, reported from the front lines in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. Her ambitious and driven personality certainly deserves memorialization, but this biography does not do her justice. Author Lindsey Hilsum is the International Editor for Channel 4 News in England and her book reads much like a human interest TV feature. Seemingly, Hilsum has never found a platitude she isn’t fond of, nor a hackneyed adjective to omit. Disproportionate emphasis is given to romances, alcohol, cigarettes, Yale, makeup, commentary on the dated appearance of Laura Ashley dresses, yachts and other silly bric-à -brac accumulated along the path to fame. The evident goal is to create an inspirational work and encourage readers to “live life to its fullest”, as did Colvin. It's a "You Go, Girl" sorta book."Extremis" drifts along (somewhat like Marie herself) until the final chapters where the pace picks up. Hilsum finally includes relevant excerpts from Colvin’s own work. This alleviates the tedium imparted by the author’s previous reliance on innumerable anecdotes, banal asides and fluffy facts (do we really need to know what brand of underwear Colvin preferred? her shopping preferences?) These distract from the narrative and end up trivializing the subject.Contextualizing the role of war correspondents and delving further into Colvin’s motives would relieve some of the superficiality of this book. This could have been achieved by in-depth interviews with friends, family and colleagues. Why are war correspondents important in the current media milieu? Do war reports really alter the trajectory of conflict or are these pieces more "If it bleeds, it leads" fodder for enhancing sales. The impression of “padding” the narrative to achieve an easy, book-length report lingers around the margins, this due to the immense amount of trivia, much of which could have been edited without detriment to the story and helped answer some of these important questions.Marie Colvin contributed significantly to front-line reporting by dramatizing the plight of non-combatants: that seems to be one of her prime contributions. She demonstrates that there is more to the undertaking than owning a social media account and a smartphone. Why not emphasize that aspect of her biography instead of dwelling on the Hemingway/Gellhorn alcohol-soaked, macho-meets-feminist romantic angles? Is her stature the equivalent to Bernard Fall? Max Hastings? What's the difference between a military memoir (written by, for example, a combat veteran on a particular campaign or encounter) and a war correspondent? How does the role of a journalist like Colvin differ from a military historian, one who interviews and reports on civilian and combatant perspectives? You'll never know about any of that if you rely on this biography to be educated and informed. This sympathetic but superficial portrait generally fails to adequately memorialize Colvin's journalism. The book is adequate but just so. Perhaps a more definitive work by a skilled biographer will help Colvin assume her rightful place in combat journalism.

Read the book in 2 days. Very well written.

A brilliant deep dive into the lives of one of her generation's greatest foreign correspondents. Thoroughly and extensively researched, written with a beautiful direct and elegant style. A book that will stand the test of time along with the great works on journalists. A wonderful reporter and incidentally, a woman! Thankyou Marie Colvin. Thankyou Lindsey Hilsum.

I saw the movie "A Private War" which inspired me to buy the book. This was an excellent read and riveting.

A riveting true life story about the brave, bold journalist Marie Colvin. The risks she took to tell the story of people in war zones during horrific crises around the world, came from her deep compassion, & need for action on behalf of the most vulnerable. She was an adventurous woman, & a gifted journalist ~ I enjoyed reading about her life. Her personal challenges make her sympathetic, & show the strength she had from childhood to her last days.

Colvin's bravery serves as a role model for all of us. I will use this book in a women's history class in the spring.

An honest bio of bad ass Marie Colvin; her work vs. her mess of private life. her haunts, her habits, her determination. One of the most acclaimed journalists of all times, Colvin's life just adds to the read of a woman in control of everything but herself. I loved, loved, loved this book.
