I have been an educator for 18 years, teaching elementary school and special needs kids. It’s been clear to me that every student requires their own individualized approach to learn best and attain the full capacity of their potential, but this is the first book that lays out a clear and actionable explanation not just for why this is, but places it in a much broader context of what students need to live a satisfying, meaningful life. This should be required reading for every educator.

Anybody who reads self-help books knows that they've been changing over the past decade or so, becoming more focused on your individuality instead of offering generic prescriptions that everyone should follow (ex. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People). But Dark Horse is the best of this new bunch. There are other books out there that offer empowering advice based on harnessing your individually, but Todd Rose is the only author who draws upon twenty-first century science, math and research. He shares just enough science to make it clear he knows what he is talking about but it is not boring or dry and he stays focused on how to use this knowledge to actually live a better life. I liked the table inside the book that compares the dark horse mindset to the traditional self-help/success mindset and how I know when I have reached it. That is when I realized how different the dark horse mindset really is. It's revolutionary! The book is well worth the read.

I had high hopes for this book based on an article I had previously read about the authors' work. Alas the book did not meet my expectations. Specifically, the book is too dependent on anectodal examples and belabors a point that could have been made in three paragraphs. Then there is a chapter thrown in to make a point about university admission policies just for fun. Overall I'm completely disappointed with this book.

This book is a page-turner and I read the whole thing during my 6 hour flight. I was already loving this book and then it reaches the conclusion where it unexpectedly takes everything to an even higher level. The authors offer a radically different way of thinking about a successful life, and it feels like something very new and different—and then they show how all of this was embodied in the American Declaration of Independence. I never thought about the Declaration before, but this book made me see it in a whole new light, which also helped me see how we define success in society in a new light. We are so obsessed with rank-based quotas for success, but this is exactly what they did in the Soviet Union, too. The idea of being a dark horse is a very American idea. In this time of extreme political chaos and partisanship, it was a non-partisan message that transcends political views and is grounded in basic American ideals that anyone can achieve success while being true to themselves.

A lot of people say to follow your passion. That sounds like pretty good advice, but this book says that's too passive. Engineer your passion instead! This book is all about giving you the power to make the right choices, instead of just following other people's decisions. Individuality matters!

I couldn't put this book down. It describes a very different way of thinking about talent and makes a strong case that our existing system encourages all the wrong things when it comes to identifying and nurturing talent. It suggests that each individual’s talent consists of a unique set of “fuzzy strengths”—fuzzy because there is no such thing as a strength without a context, since something can be a strength in one setting but a weakness in another setting. It’s a different way of thinking about it than I’ve encountered before and very empowering.

Through their research at Harvard, the authors examine the characteristics and histories of individuals who forged unique paths to professional and personal success. Bucking the standardized ladders of achievement, these individuals harness their passions, motives and strategies to attain fulfillment in very varied walks of life.This is a "must read" for parents, educators and any individual looking to "take the path less traveled".

As an educator, I feel there are valuable insights in this book as to why over 66% of our students are disengaged in our education system and this book outlines elements we can use to redesign teaching and learning to breakout of the "standardized" systemic environment of our classrooms today.Dark Horse opened my eyes to how humans are innately built much differently than the standardized society we have created. So many people in our society are unhappy or unfulfilled and standardization is just not designed for personal fulfillment. This book will change your perspective and make you realize that "passion is not something you follow but something you engineer!"My favorite part of this book is how they linked the Dark Horse Covenant to the vision of our founding forefathers! The "pursuit of happiness" is an unalienable Right stated in the American Declaration of Independence in which they believed an ideal society includes individuality and fulfillment (happiness) and not just for a few but for everyone and we should be working together to ensure that individuality matters.
