This book was incredible! Like I could say countless things about how powerful the conversations were between Audrey and Hugo as well as how…spicy (is that the right word for it?) things were between Audrey and Logan. Everything was so much more powerful than I expected, whether it was in a good or bad situation. However, one thing I definitely want to say is that Audrey was VERY relatable. I was going through some struggles of my own and knowing what I was feeling lead to do, but wanting to against that feeling and do it anyway was something I could relate to. Never a good idea to go against! So thankful that the author really showed the powerful love God has for us even when we make mistakes and feel ashamed. Can I take a moment to say the "bad guy" surprised me? Way to go in mixing things up when I had reasons why I thought the bad guy would be someone else!Ooo also, can I take another moment to appreciate the excellent humor in this book, especially pertaining to the revealing of who Hugo and Joe are? Talk about priceless!Definitely a fantastic read and one I would strongly recommend to YA readers, especially if you're looking for a "different" Christian read with romance.*(I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed were my own and was not required to write a positive review.)*

Julie Hall’s “Warfare,” her sequel to “Huntress,” continues the afterlife adventures (?) of first-person protagonist Audrey and her fellow hunters in a “realm” that’s looking less and less like the Christian conception of heaven. Granted, she doesn’t call it heaven; rather, she consistently refers to it as “the realm,” all lower-case. But there are angels there, and the faithful who’ve died, and now and then we even get an appearance by one of the Three Persons of God. So is it heaven or isn’t it? And if it isn’t, then what is it?Perhaps I’m being too nit-picky about a fantasy adventure intended principally to entertain. All the same, the amount of undisguised preaching in “Warfare” substantially exceeds that in “Huntress,” so the reader is justified in concluding that evangelism is one of Miss Hall’s reasons for writing. I have no problem with evangelism – without it, Christianity would have died out with the original twelve Apostles – but the fantastic elements “Warfare” marries to it make for a strange mix. Some examples of fantastic deviations from Christian conceptions:1. Non-mortals – angels, demons, and the hunters – can have material effects on the temporal world.2. The hunters, though their mortal lives have ended, possess bodies that must be fed and generally maintained, can be wounded, and often require healing3. Demons can inflict damage and pain on angels and hunters, but can’t kill them.4. Hunters can be captured by demons and held prisoner. They can also be converted from allegiance to God to allegiance to Satan.5. Satan is permitted much more latitude than is compatible with Christian doctrine about his damnation. The aggregate requires a lot of suspension of disbelief...though some of that is always required in fictions that address matters of religion. C. S. Lewis got away with a lot of it. John Conroe does it unabashedly. I’ve fiddled around the edges myself. I suppose Miss Hall’s fictional liberties will be granted absolution, too.All that having been said, “Warfare” is every bit as entertaining as “Huntress,” both for its adventure segments and the on-again-off-again romance between Audrey and Logan. (Romance in the afterlife? Tell me there aren’t singles bars, too. Please!) The conclusion of the novel is a classic cliffhanger, so readers are advised to be ready for a third book.

I honestly don't even know where to start with Warfare. This book climbed inside of my head and my heart and took up residence. It challenged me in ways that I was grateful for. Each character is so well thought out, crucial, and perfectly paced. Julie is a master storyteller, and spins this elaborate Life After world that you can fully immerse yourself into. I found myself wondering how I would deal with the challenges that her MC Audrey faces. I found myself reliving memories from my own life, struggles that I've overcome, but are watching Audrey dive head first into. I keep telling everyone that I WISH I had been able to read this book as a teenager. I would have found so many similarities and probably faced challenges much differently. This book has every facet of what a book should be. A vivid world dipped in everything you could possibly want to see in the After Life, rich emotion that you can either find yourself in or that you've experienced with others, a range of emotions that are true and very real. This story was also perfectly paced to give you time to really enjoy everything about it. The humor was so spot on, and I often think about and crack up at what I previously read.Thank you so much Julie for providing an outlet, an escape, that I could pour myself into and get lost inside of,for far longer than when the bookwas closed. I will be sharing both of your books with whoever will listen to me shouting it from the rooftops!
