From Library Journal
Twilight, that indistinct time between day and night, is an appropriate title for the latest and most substantial monograph by photographer Crewdson (after 1999's Dream of Life and 1998's Hover). Continuing his tradition of photographing cinematically staged and darkened realities of suburban life, Crewdson presents characters who exist in a world where American Beauty meets The X-Files. This volume's 40 images, which were inspired by Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, were created much like a feature film; the production crew included lighting supervisors, pyrotechnic experts, interior designers, and bug wranglers. Crewdson's fabricated realities contradict the traditional photographic adage of the "decisive moment." In using this method, he demonstrates that the camera can do much more than capture a moment in time, thus placing this work in the vanguard of contemporary art photography. The book begins with an essay by novelist Moody and ends with production stills and credits. Recommended for all public and academic collections. Shauna Frischkorn, Millersville Univ. Lib., PA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Bought this as a gift for my son who is an avid photographer who enjoys making HDR images. Crewdson's photo images provide him inspiration as well as visual enjoyment. Having turned through the pages, I too was impressed with this photographer's surreal use of HDR and color rendering, turning seemingly ordinary slice of life scenes into beautiful works of art. Evocatively delightful sometimes haunting, this is a quality collection of artful images that stir ones spirit and imagination.
Absolutely love Crewdson's work, he's one of my favorites. Sadly this book's print quality is terrible, the colors look off (strange color casts and saturations) and it looks like it was poorly printed as if someone used low resolution images to make this book. It also didn't come shrink wrapped which makes me think maybe this book was a fake one even though it was an official shipped by Amazon book.
Gregory Crewdson is not just an amazing photographer, but an incredible set designer too. His photos are reminiscent of the sadness/loneliness and otherworldlyness so characteristic of Edward Hopper's paintings. I saw a documentary on Crewdson's methods, and he leaves no small detail to chance. He's an incredible artist!
I first encountered this book in graduate school in 2002, and it's been a touchstone in my visual research library ever since. The photographs are meticulously crafted and cinematic. Each image seems to contain manifold stories, and a good deal of the pleasure I find in this book is in constructing my own personal narratives to go along with each one.I highly recommend this book for lovers of art, light, and the possibilities of visual non-narrative storytelling.
Crewdson is famous for his fully staged photography - essentially, cinema level set building, design, dressing and lighting. According to Rick Moody's unhelpful introduction, most of these are dream images. What I find curious is that the unstaged photographs of Eggelston, Moriyama, Arbus, Frank and so on, seem more uncanny and dreamlike. Crewdson's work feels overdetermined and airless.Otoh, the gallery prints are very large, so perhaps the effect is more compelling there. However, his work is less interesting than Jeff Wall's or Cindy Sherman's.
Bought as a gift, he loved it.
If you know and love this photographer you will love this book. If you have never seen his work, you should buy this book and acquaint yourself with it.
