About the Author

Don Fiehmann has combined his knowledge of electronics with his interest in model railroading and Digital Command Control in writing The DCC Guide. This is Don s second book for Kalmbach; his first, Basic Electronics and Electricity for Model Railroaders, was published by Kalmbach in 1988. Don retired from IBM in 1992 after working nearly 35 years as an electronics engineer. Along with writing and pursuing his hobby of model railroading, Don continues to work as a consultant in the hobby industry. He lives in California with his wife, Marla.

Great book on the subject, I was looking for a book for a beginner on DCC; and this did a great way of explaining how to setup a DCC layout; and all the equipment that is out there. I have been out of the hobby for 30 years.

Great book, worth the investment. The problem with all books of this sort is none of them are truly comprehensive, so you'll need a library to cover all the bases. This book is well written and most of the photos are helpful. If you're getting started in DCC, you need this one in your library.

This is a highly technical book that gives you the complete background on Digital Command Control (DCC) used in model railroading including its history and what may be coming in the future. Be warned that some knowledge of things electrical is required for full understanding of the information provided.

Has given me the basics and ideas on how DCC works.

Great book, explains in simple to understand terms and pictures. Well written and well worth my time to read. Lots of good useful up to date information. It fills in the blanks for the technology.

This book is great if you are a beginner just starting with DCC and want a general overview and orientation. It will help you learn the jargon.

Great writer but if you've followed MODEL RAILROAD CRAFTMAN magazine & read his articles in iy; then you'd pretty much gather the info in the book,yet it;s a wonderful read if you haven't followed that magazine.

This book has a lot of technical detail but it was not what I was looking for. Am new to model railroading and because I watched some youtube videos I got intimidated by what it would take to wire up a DCC system. After thumbing thru this book I decided to just "go for it" and wired up my Bachmann EZ DCC controller. My train worked right off bat with no programming and then I decided to program a couple engines. Went very smooth including getting lights to work. I was off and running in nothing flat. My system will get more complicated over time and maybe this book will have some value at that stage.
